Paying it Forward
I often tell my patients that having a skin condition can be a blessing. At first, they look at me like I’m crazy. No, really, it’s like a superpower. Because everyone I know who has ever had to endure the challenges of having a visible difference has become stronger, kinder, and more compassionate toward the suffering of others because of it. I believe the world could use a lot more love like that, don’t you?
When you teach others to see you as you see yourself, you show them what makes you strong, what makes you resilient, what makes you uniquely beautiful. And you inspire them to do the same. I have been lucky enough to be a part of so many local, national, and international organizations that have impacted children in such profound ways, allowing me to give a voice to those who don’t always have it and to give them the confidence to use it loudly and proudly. To show them that they are loved for all their unique gifts and talents that make them so very beautiful. To encourage and lift them up so that they can let their light shine the way only they know how to do. My proudest moment as a supporter and volunteer of these wonderful organizations is seeing these children learn how to advocate not only for themselves but for others — in their families, their neighborhoods, their communities, and the world.
